Install

This page covers what BetterEdits needs, where to get it, what the first launch shows, how updates arrive, and how to uninstall.

Requirements

Intel Macs are not supported.

Download

Download the disk image from the download page. Open it and drag BetterEdits anywhere you like; Applications is usual but nothing depends on it. The editor is free. Pro is agentic use; see Pro.

The app is signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple, so it opens like any other download. If macOS ever refuses a build, open System Settings › Privacy & Security, scroll down to the message about BetterEdits, and click Open Anyway.

First launch

The first launch shows the welcome tour: three slides and the Pro offer, with Start free trial, Sign in and Continue without Pro. The editor needs no account. Leave the tour and the workspace window opens with New Workspace… and Open Workspace…. Help › Welcome Tour… and Settings › Account bring the tour back at any time.

From there, Your first video walks through a first edit in ten minutes.

Updates

Once a day the app asks the website whether a newer build exists. Nothing is sent but the request. When there is one, a window shows the version and what changed, with three choices: Install Update, Remind Me Later and Skip This Version. Install Update downloads the new build, checks its signature, replaces the app and opens it again; your workspaces are not touched. Check for Updates… in the BetterEdits menu does the same on demand and says so when you are up to date. Builds before 0.4.2 hand you a disk image instead: open it and drag the new copy over the old one, once, and updates install themselves from then on.

Uninstall

Drag BetterEdits out of Applications. Workspaces are documents of plain files and stay where they are. If this Mac was signed in, sign it out first from the account badge, or from the dashboard afterwards; see Pro. The app's own files, its settings and the sign-in, live in ~/Library/Application Support/BetterEdits.
